Becoming an “intelligent City” allows the community to develop their full local and global potential...
The conference proceedings will include
applications to improve city services to
its residents and guests...
Few leaders and policy makers question the importance of keeping up with technological advancements and global trends toward becoming competitive, knowledge based economies. Nor do they question that becoming an “intelligent city” presents the community with opportunities to develop its full potential on local and global scales. A Key issue to be addressed by the conference is how best to create an “Intelligent City” or community?
Global trends: building
new communities,
and transforming
existing ones...
Globally and within the Kingdom, dual strategies to create intelligent cities are underway. The first is to build master-planned complete new intelligent cities. The second is to transform existing cities into intelligent and leading edge communities. In the Kingdom, the new six mega cities projects planned in the various regions of the country are a prime example of master planned communities designed to be state-of-the-art intelligent cities. Existing cities meanwhile are not allowing technological advancements to pass them by. The Holy city of Makkah has taken steps to join in leading the growing national interest in transforming the nation’s leading cities into intelligent cities.
The objectives of Intelligent
Cities Conference (ICC) 2009
include helping cities overcome
challenges to their transformation and take advantage of their
opportunities...
The conference will
address the needed
infrastructure: fixed
broadband fiber
optics and wireless
technologies... plus
issue of convergence
and integration...
While the experts realize that building an intelligent city starts with a top of the line broadband infrastructure, the debate centers on how to deploy such an infrastructure. Do communities invest in fixed lines and fiber optics, or wireless alternatives, or both? More importantly how to support convergence trends and integrate the various technologies transforming the nation’s leading cities into intelligent cities.
The conference
proceedings will cover
more than the nature of
a suitable broadband
grid and wired governments and homes…
Deliberations will include e-government, safety control systems and security applications, intelligent city management applications, and most importantly is how to develop a large community of users with ICT skills. While the availability of the needed broadband infrastructure is the central issue for the needed transformation, the conference proceedings will also address the required applications to improve city services to residents and guests, boost productivity, enhance global communications, and provide state-of-the-art emergency response and disaster mitigation applications.
Best Practices from
around the world
showcased at the
Conference...
More and more cities around the world are taking the necessary steps to transform their communities into “Intelligent Cities”. These cities recognize that becoming an “Intelligent City” requires the ability to integrate key transformation factors into a cohesive plan and implementation program. To focus on these transformation factors, the conference will showcase best practices from around the globe, especially from cities that were recognized as the most successful in this endeavor.
